The first flutters you can actually name.
About the size of a bell pepper — or a guinea pig, or a croissant. 14.2 cm (5.6 in), 190 g (7 oz).
What's happening this week. Kicks are getting strong enough to feel — first as flutters, then unmistakably. Unique fingerprints are set, and the baby yawns and hiccups.
First noticeable kicks. Unique fingerprints formed. Yawning and hiccuping.
Those first fluttery movements have their own name — quickening.
What your partner can do this week: Offer to come to the mid-pregnancy scan — on the NHS it's between 18 and 21 weeks — and book the time off. Write your questions for that scan onto the appointment. Ask to be told when there's movement. You may not feel it from the outside for a while, but you can still be there for it.
