At 36 weeks, the baby is about the size of a romaine lettuce — roughly 47 cm (18.5 in), 2.6 kg (5 lb 12 oz). What's happening, and what the partner can do.

One more week to early term.

About the size of a romaine lettuce — or a small poodle, or a tiered cake. 47 cm (18.5 in), 2.6 kg (5 lb 12 oz).

What's happening this week. Full term is just around the corner. The baby rehearses the going-home skills — breathing, sucking, swallowing — and gains weight steadily.

Practising breathing rhythms. Gaining about 30 g a day. Early term from next week.

Many babies drop lower into the pelvis around now — you may literally breathe easier.

What your partner can do this week: Hand over at work so you can leave at short notice. Freeze a few more meals. Put the next check-ups in the calendar — they tend to come closer together now.
